Atherton is a small, rural, and residential community, with no industrial land-use base in San Mateo County, on the San Francisco Peninsula. Native live oaks, white oaks, bays, redwoods, cedars, pines, and other ornamental trees cover the six square miles of town.  Atherton had a population of approximately 7200 as of 2013, and it was also ranked as the most expensive zip code by Forbes in 2013.  Sprawling estates and mostly one acre minimum plots are the norm, and it is private and desirable bedroom community with City Parks and within close proximity to shopping and commute routes.
